History: Located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the United States Air Force Academy was established in 1954, and is one of the largest tourist attractions in all of Colorado. For decades before it's opening, advocates for the Air Force had been trying to get an institute separate from the Army (U.S. Military Academy) and Navy (Naval Academy). Concerns over cost, curriculum, and location were constant deterrents, which delayed Congressional approval. Finally, in 1950, Dwight D. Eisenhower insisted that it was a necessity for the separate academy because the needs of the Air Force could not be met by the other two service academies. Finally, Congress passed legislation in 1954. Eisenhower signed it into law on April 1st of that year, and the Secretary of the Air Force, Harold E. Talbott announced Colorado Springs as the official site on June 24th. July 11, 1955 the first class of cadets were sworn in.
