History: This Black Heritage Series stamp sheet features the portrait of American singer and actor, Paul Robeson (April 9, 1898 - January 23, 1976). Valedictorian of his graduating class at Rutgers University, Robeson was also an All-American football star who went on to earn his law degree at Columbia Law School. He also played two seasons in the NFL. After spending a few years in London acting in venues such as the Savoy Theater, he became an international star for roles in Show Boat and Sanders of the River. Robeson soon became familiarized to the sufferings of other cultures and people, and quit the theater to become an advocate for the Council of African Affairs. Due to his pro-Soviet views, the U.S. State Department revoked his passport, forcing him to retire and live out the rest of his life in Philadelphia. Today, he is seen as one of the first to show dignity and pride for black actors around the world.
