History: Often called the "King of Country Music," Roy Acuff (September 15, 1903 - November 23, 1992) is credited with changing country music from the "hoedown" format to more of a singer-based format that we hear today. After gaining recognition as the singer of the Smoky Mountain Boys, and after joining the Grand Ole Opry in 1938, he co-founded Acuff-Rose Music which signed artists such as Hank Williams, Roy Orbison, and The Everly Brothers. In 1962, Roy Acuff became the first living person inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
