History: In 1803, the United States purchased and area of 828,000 square miles from the French for a total of $15 million. The land included what is today's Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska, and parts of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, New Mexico, Texas, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Louisiana. Due to the slave revolt in Haiti, and a war with Britain, France agreed to sell all of the territory to America despite the fact the U.S. was only looking to purchase New Orleans and its surrounding area.
