• History: Now considered a collectible, toleware is typically decorated kitchen-related items made from metal, such as tin or steel.  Popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, these items generally use a decorative style called Japanning, which is an imitation of Asian lacquer-work that was originally used on furniture.  This style was incorporated into teapots, trays, urns, and candlesticks to name a few.
