History: Named after cabinetmaker, Thomas Chippendale, this type of furniture was the most famous name in the history of English furniture. Designed in the late 1700's, this type of furniture falls into three different categories. The Gothic style features pointed arches and S-shaped curves on the backs of the chairs. The Rococo, or modern, design was modified from French chairs with a broad-seated ribbon-back chair as well as a back rail in the shape of Cupid's bow. The third category is the Chinese Chippendale. This design features interlocking diagonals, and became most popular in the United States in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
