History: Beginning in the 19th century, the Navajo began using silver in their jewelry. Credited as being the first Navajo silversmith, Atsidi Sani learned his skill from a Mexican smith in the early 1850's. These Navajo smiths would take melted coins, flatware, and ingots they traded for from European settlers to make their buckles, rings, canteens, earrings, and crescent-shaped pendants known as "najas." Starting in the 1880's, these smiths started incorporating turquoise into their jewelry. Made from a string of plain round silver beads, the Squash Blossom Necklace is one of the most important forms of Navajo jewelry. The Navajo take so much pride in their work that their jewelry is a highly sought after collectible.
