History: Born Erik Weisz in Budapest, Hungary, Harry Houdini (March 24, 1874 - October 31, 1926) was an illusionist best known for his incredible escape acts. Houdini started his magic career in 1891 performing in dime museums and sideshows, finding little success. Houdini's big break came in 1899, when he started concentrating more on his escapes. Five years later, the London Daily Mirror challenged him to escape from a special set of handcuffs a locksmith named Nathanial Hart took five years to make. It is said Houdini was bested that day, and required help from his wife to break out of the cuffs. Later in his career, Harry Houdini took to expose psychics and mediums, often attending their seances in disguise. In 1926, a Montreal college student delivered numerous punches to the abdomen of Houdini. Denying medical help, Houdini continued to perform throughout the next few days. He made his last performance on October 24, 1926, and it was reported that he passed out during the show. After the show, he was hospitalized, and a few days later, he died of peritonitis as well as a ruptured appendix.
