  • History: Known as a "fire-dependent forest," the Longleaf Pine Forest is located in the southeastern United States.  The Longleaf Pines typically grow in sandy, dry, acidic soils, and require sunlight to grow. Getting their name for having the longest leaves of the eastern pine species, they are one of the few trees that survive the frequent wildfires that sweep through their forests.  The Longleaf Pine Forests are home to a vast array of wildlife including the Gray Fox, Red-bellied Woodpecker, and the carnivorous Yellow Pitcher Plants.
