History: Known as the "Father of the Constitution," James Madison served in Congress from 1781-1797, as Secretary of State from 1801-1809, and as the 4th President of the United States from 1809-1817. As a leader in the House of Representatives, Madison was key in drafting the first ten amendments to the Constitution. In 1791, along with Thomas Jefferson, he helped to create the new Republican Party. As Secretary of State, he supervised the Louisiana Purchase, which, at the time, doubled the size of the country. After becoming president, James Madison led the nation in the War of 1812 due to Great Britain's attempt to stop the country from settling around the Great Lakes. On June 28, 1836, Madison died at his home. He was the last of the Founding Fathers.
