History: Often referred to as one of the "fathers of the atom bomb," Enrico Fermi (September 29, 1901 - November 28, 1954) was an Italian physicist who worked on the first nuclear reactor known as Chicago Pile-1. Fermi became an American citizen in 1944, and won many awards throughout his career including the Nobel Prize, the Medal for Merit, and the Barnard Medal for Meritorious Service to Science. One of the few physicists to excel theoretically and experimentally, Fermi contributed to the development of quantum theory, statistical mechanics, and particle and nuclear physics.
