History: One of the first conductors born in the United States to receive worldwide acclaim, Leonard Bernstein (August 25, 1918 - October 14, 1990) was most known for directing the New York Philharmonic. On top of his fame as a world renowned conductor, Bernstein also wrote for musicals such as Peter Pan, Candide, and most famously, West Side Story. Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, he attended Harvard University where he studied music. Bernstein died of a heart attack five days after he announced his retirement in 1990. To this day, Leonard Bernstein is still widely recognized as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century.
