  • History: The area west of the Mississippi River and east of the Rocky Mountains lies the Great Plains.  Covering parts of ten states, the prairies are home to many animals and plants.  Long inhabited by Native Americans, the Great Plains were home to herds of American Buffalo (Bison).  Due to the slaughter by settlers making their way west, the American buffalo was brought near the point of extinction.   Today, the prairie is still known for its great deal of plants and animals.  From the burrowing prairie dog, and the pronghorn, North America's fastest land animal, to the prairie's wild roses and Coneflowers. The Great Plains is still home to a vast array of wildlife.
