History: Swedish inventor, Alfred Nobel, was also a chemist and engineer. He made most of his fortune from his 355 inventions, most notably being dynamite. Following his death in 1896, and at the behest of his last will and testament, Nobel's entire fortune was used to create a series of prizes for those who create the "greatest benefit to mankind." The Nobel Prize is a set of annual awards given in six different categories. The prizes are for outstanding work in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, economics, and promotion of peace. First awarded in 1901, 876 individuals and organizations have received these awards. The Nobel prize is widely considered the most prestigious award available in each respective field.
