• History: One of the most widely cultivated tree fruits is the apple.  A member of the rose family, the Apple Tree originated in Central Asia.  Apples have been grown for thousands of years in Asia and Europe, and was brought to North America by European colonists.  Today, the United States is the second-leading producers of apple's worldwide, second only to China.  Grown in tropical and subtropical climates, oranges are the most cultivated fruit tree in the world.  This popular fruit is a cross between the Pomelo and the Mandarin. The two states that are known for growing the most oranges are California and Florida.  Since oranges are rich in vitamin C and do not easily spoil, sailors used to plant seeds along trade routes to prevent scurvy.
