History: This stamp is titled "Statue of Liberty". The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the people of France, and was designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. The statue, which is located on Liberty Island in New York stands 305 feet tall and is a welcoming sign to immigrants arriving from abroad. The robed Lady Liberty holds a torch and a tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) which is inscribed with the date of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated to the United States on October 28, 1886, but the torch-bearing arm was displayed at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, and in New York's Madison Square Park from 1876 to 1882. To this day, the Statue of Liberty is a symbol of freedom, and is still one of New York's most popular tourist attractions.
