History: The Quilts of Gee's Bend were created by a group of women who live in the isolated African-American settlement of Gee's Bend, Alabama. The quilting tradition in Gee's Bend dates back to the 19th century when the community was a cotton plantation owned by Joseph Gee. The women of Gee's Bend would make quilts to keep themselves and their children warm in their unheated shacks. The style is distinctive because of its lively improvisations and simplicity. These quilts have been displayed at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. Micheal Kimmelman's review in The New York Times called the quilts "some of the most miraculous works of modern art Americans have produced." More than 50 quilt makers currently make up the Gee's Bend Collective, and every quilt sold is unique and individually produced.
