History: This Distinguished American Diplomats stamp sheet features six legendary Diplomats from United States history. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Robert D. Murphy played a big part in forging the agreement in 1941 that would allow the United States to export to French North Africa even though the British had placed a blockade and trade restrictions against the area. Frances E. Willis was the first female career Foreign Service Officer to serve as an Ambassador for the United States. In 1953, President Eisenhower appointed her U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland. Hiram Bingham IV is best known for serving as Vice Consul in Marsilles, France, during World War II. He had a major role in helping Jewish refugees flee France as Nazi forces were invading the area. Philip Habib was best known for his work in Vietnam, South Korea, and the middle East. He played a big part in many peace talks over his career, and in 1982, Habib was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his efforts. Joining the State Department in 1929, Charles Bohlen worked in embassies all over the world, including Russia and Japan. He worked closely with President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and served as his interpreter at the Tehran Conference in 1943, as well the Yalta Conference in 1945. Clifton Wharton, Sr. was the first black Foreign Service Officer to become chief of a diplomatic mission. Although his career opportunities were limited throughout the first 25 years of his 40-year career, Wharton was later appointed to significant roles in U.S. foreign services.
