  • History: Arthur Ashe (July 10, 1943 - February 6, 1993) is best known for being one of the best American tennis players of all time. Ashe won three Grand Slam titles throughout the course of his career. He is the first African-American to be selected for the United States Davis Cup Team. In addition to his accomplishments as a team player he is also the only African-American player to win the men's singles title at Wimbledon, US Open and Australian Open. In 1992,  Ashe publicly announced that he was HIV-positive. He began humanitarian efforts to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS and established the Arthur Ashe Foundation for the Defeat of AIDS. In 1993, Ashe died from AIDS related pneumonia in New York. To this day Ashe is considered the best African-American male tennis player of all time.
