• History: Ten different aircraft or planes are featured on this Advances in Aviation stamp sheet and can be broken down into 3 general categories: civil or passenger planes, utility planes, and fighter planes. The majority pictured are fighter or bomber planes. The fighter aircraft featured were all introduced between 1940 and 1950. There are two passenger aircraft: the Boeing 247 and the Ercoupe 415 represented on this sheet of stamps. The Ercoupe was designed to be an extremely safe mode of transportation for two passengers. The Boeing 247 was designed to transport multiple passengers. The Bonanza and the PBY Catalina are the utility aircraft most often used for research and search and rescue flights. Although it was mainly a utility aircraft, the PBY Catalina was used at times for anti-submarine warfare.
