- History: Marian Anderson (February 27, 1897 - April 8 1993) was a female, African-American vocalist whose singing career consisted entirely of performing in concerts and recitals. Anderson sang in a style known as "contralto" which is the lowest and deepest sound of the female voice. Being the first African-American ever to perform at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City made Anderson an iconic figure in working to overcome prejudice during the mid-20th century. Her work in the civil rights movement included singing at the March on Washington in 1963. She was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Medal of Arts and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award throughout the course of her career.
