History: The Negro Baseball Leagues were formed by African-American and some Latin-Americans before racial integration in Major League Baseball. The first league, known as the "National Colored Baseball League" failed in 1887, due to low attendance. Andrew "Rube" Foster, who is pictured on stamp #4466, was a major factor in the development of Negro League Baseball. Foster is arguably the greatest pitcher of the first decade of the 1900s. He founded and managed one of history's most successful black baseball teams known as the Chicago American Giants. Foster is considered the "Father of Black Baseball" and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981.
