History: The Gulf Coast Lighthouses stamp sheet is part of a series of sheets featuring lighthouses. There are five different lighthouses featured. The Matagorda Island Lighthouse in Calhoun County, Texas, it is made out of steel and stands 79 feet tall. It is owned and maintained by Texas Parks and Wildlife. The Sabine Pass Lighthouse is located in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. It was constructed out of brick in 1856 and stands 75 feet tall. The lighthouse has been abandoned and is no longer in use, however there are efforts to preserve the property. The Biloxi Lighthouse is the only lighthouse in the United States that stands in the middle of a four lane highway. It was built in 1948 out of brick, is 45 feet high and was declared to be a Mississippi landmark in 1987. The Sand Island Lighthouse is located about 3 miles off the shore of Mobile, Alabama. This lighthouse stands 132 feet tall making it the tallest of the lighthouses featured on this sheet. It is constructed from stone and is considered to be the entry point to Mobile Bay in Alabama. The Garden Key Lighthouse is located 70 miles west of Key West, Florida. It was originally constructed out of brick in 1824, then in 1877, it was renovated and reinforced with boilerplate iron. Due to the dangerous reefs in the area the Lighthouse Board announced that the Garden Key Lighthouse is one of the most crucial navigation aids in the United States.
