- History: The Hanukkah stamp sheet commemorates the Jewish festival also known as "The Feast of Dedication" or the "Festival of Lights." It is an eight day celebration which observes an event that happened around 164 B.C. where a small group of Jews led by Judah Maccabee took back their temple that had been captured by the King of Syria. The stamp depicts the image of a "menorah" which is Hebrew word for "lamp". Each of the 8 lower candles represent one of the 8 days of the Hanukkah celebration. The ninth candle in the center is called the "shamash" which translates to "helper" or "servant" and is used to light the other candles surrounding it. Hanukkah celebrates the re-dedication of the Jewish temple in Jerusalem to the Hebrew god.
