History: The Sonoran Desert covers approximately 100,000 square miles, the majority is in Mexico with a portion sprawling into Arizona and California. Although it is North America's hottest desert climate it is still home to one of the world's most diverse biological systems. The Sonoran Desert is home to over 500 animals and 2,000 native plants including, but not limited to, the Gila Monster, Western Diamondback Rattlesnake and the Saguaro Cactus. Saguaro are the large tree-like cacti that are somewhat of a symbol of western culture.
