History: Pacific lighthouses in the United States have been built and maintained by the Coast Guard. Although abundant in most states that border the Pacific Ocean, this stamp sheet, the fourth in a series, features specifically those of Hawaii, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and California. In Honolulu, Hawaii, on the Island of Oahu, stands the Lighthouse of Diamond Head. A small island that lies between Stephens Passage and Frederick Sound in southeastern Alaska boasts the Five Finger Islands Light and was one of the first of two U.S. government lighthouses that opened in Alaska, lit first on March 21, 1902. It was the last lighthouse in Alaska to be automated on August 14, 1984. At 107 feet, Grays Harbor Lighthouse, dedicated in 1898, is the tallest lighthouse in Washington and the third tallest on the West Coast. Umpqua River Light was built in 1855 and lit in 1857. Built along the river channel and vulnerable to seasonal flooding, its foundations became too unstable and in 1863, the structure collapsed. In 1888, however, Congress eventually approved of a construction of a new lighthouse. Finally, a lighthouse in St. George Reef in California is shown. It is a wave-washed lighthouse, one where the ocean hits from all sides. Numerous accidents and wrecks plagued the lighthouse, but it was finally completed in 1892.
