- History: Cranes are large, long-legged and long-necked birds which unlike the similar-looking herons, fly with necks outstretched, not pulled back. Cranes live on all continents except Antarctica and South America and are considered critically endangered. The U.S. Government has passed legislation aimed at protecting these cranes. Shown in this sheet of stamps are the Whooping Crane and the Black-Necked Crane. The Whooping Crane is the tallest North American bird and is known for its whooping sound. The Black-Necked Crane lives primarily in Asia and is revered in Buddhist traditions and culturally protected.
