• History: Issued on August 6th, 1977.  These stamps were issued as a tribute to the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Oriskany.  Brigade General Nicholas Herkimer (1728 - 1777) from the American Militia is featured.  He died of his wounds as a result of the battle. The illustration is taken from a painting of the Battle of Oriskany done by F.C. Yohn circa 1901.
