We are pleased to offer for sale this 1847 Hawaiian Cent(Keneta) coin graded and encapsulated as AU-50 BN (Brown) by NGC. Five official coins were issued for the Kingdom of Hawaii between 1847 and 1883, and there was also one unofficial five-cent piece issued in 1881. Only 100,000 of these 1847 Hawaiian Cents were minted however, it is believed that less than 10% of the original mintage survives today. The coins were privately minted by H.M. & E.I. Richards of Attleboro, MA.
The 1847 Hawaiian Cent or Keneta or Hapa Hanele was designed and engraved by Edward Hulseman. The obverse of the coin features a likeness of King Kamehameha III. The reverse features the coin value within a wreath however the denomination was spelled incorrectly. Hulseman engraved "Hapa Haneri" which should have been "Hapa Hanele". The coin is comprised of copper and has a diameter of 27mm. This 1847 Hawaiian Cent is of great worth and value to the collector who is putting together a Kingdom of Hawaii, Hawaiian Issue Set.
