Franklin Silver Half Dollars were created at the behest of Mint Director Nellie Tayloe Ross, a long time admirer of Benjamin Franklin who wished to see him honored on a coin.  John R. Sinnock designed the obverse of the coin based on a bust of Franklin by Jean-Antoine Houdon, with the obverse featuring the Liberty Bell, a symbol of American freedom as well as Franklin's home of Philadelphia. The Franklin Silver Half Dollar caused some controversy when it was released, because some people came to believe that the inclusion of the letters JRS on the coin was a tribute by a communist infiltrator to Joseph Stalin.  The less dramatic truth is that the letters JRS inscribed on the cutoff at Franklin's shoulder were merely the initials of the engraver John Sinnock.

The Franklin Silver Half Dollars were minted from 1948 through 1963 Franklin Half Dollars are comprised of .900 (90%) silver and .100 (10%) copper with a mass of 12.5 grams and a diameter of 30.6mm with a reeded edge.  The coins contain .36169 troy ounce of pure silver.
