We are pleased to offer for sale this 2009-S Jefferson Proof Nickel. The Jefferson Nickel is in Gem Proof condition, with nice eye appeal and no major marks or visible problems. This coin is taken from an original Proof set, and is an outstanding value!
The Jefferson Nickel design was selected through a mint sponsored contest in 1938, and the winning design came from Felix Schlag. Schlag's initials were added underneath the bust in 1966. The obverse of the Jefferson Nickel features a left facing profile of Jefferson, adapted from a marble bust by sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon, as well as the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The reverse features Jefferson's home Monticello. Apart from a small change to the stairs of Monticello in 1939, the design was unchanged from 1938 through 2003. The Jefferson Nickel is one of the most common designs in circulation because of the long period of mintage combined with the hardness of nickel, making it possible to find coins from the 1940s and 1950s still in circulation.
In 2006 the design of the Jefferson Nickel was substantially changed. Felix Schlag's Monticello design returned to the reverse side of the coin, replacing the various Westward Journey designs that had appeared in 2004 and 2005. The obverse of the Jefferson Nickels from 2006 onward features a new forward facing portrait of Jefferson, the first use of an image of a President facing forward on a U.S. coin. The new obverse was designed by Jamie Franki, based on an 1800 portrait by Rembrandt Peale.
The 2009-S Jefferson Proof Nickel is comprised of .750 (75%) copper and .250 (25%) nickel, with a diameter of 21.21mm and a mass of 5 grams. It is a beautiful coin in Gem Proof condition, a great value and perfect for any Jefferson Nickel collection. There were 2,172,313 of the 2009-S Jefferson Proof Nickels minted the San Francisco (S) Mint.
